Debunking the myth: Exploring the history of swimwear and underwear

The evolution of swimwear has undergone a remarkable transformation over the years, molded by ever-changing fashion trends and the ever-watchful eye of societal norms. What was once deemed suitable for a day by the beach or pool has metamorphosed into something entirely different. To understand the controversy surrounding swimming with underwear, we must first delve into the history of swimwear and its relationship with underwear.

During the early 20th century, swimwear comprised modest one-piece suits that enveloped the entire body, while underwear was ingeniously designed to provide vital support and discreet coverage beneath our clothing. Its purpose lies in ensuring comfort and modesty in our everyday attire. As swimwear started to become more revealing and designed specifically for swimming, the lines between swimwear and underwear began to blur.

Over time, swimwear manufacturers developed fabrics and designs specifically for swimming. These designs ensured that they are comfortable, quick-drying, and resistant to chlorine and saltwater. This evolution led to the creation of swimwear that is distinct from underwear in terms of functionality and style. However, the debate of whether swimming with underwear is acceptable or not remains a hot topic.

Is it OK to swim with underwear?

There are two sides to this question: firstly, the social norms and expectations, and then secondly, the functionality of swimming with underwear.

Most of the time, it is a clear, resounding "no, it is not okay to swim with underwear" when it comes to functionality. Swimwear and underwear fabrics diverge significantly, and when faced with a choice, it's always wise to prioritize proper swimwear for a day out in the water.

The second answer is a bit more difficult, and one that we will not be delving into. Social norms and expectations are changing on a daily basis and are extremely subjective and I am not opening that can of worms in this article!

The pros and cons of swimming with underwear

Like any controversial topic, there are arguments both for and against swimming with underwear. Let's take a closer look at the pros and cons to better understand the different perspectives.

Pros for swimming with underwear

The benefits of swimming with underwear are few and far between. Let's look at some possible pros:

Convenience:
One of the main advantages of swimming with underwear is the convenience it offers. If you find yourself unexpectedly in need of swimwear, your underwear can serve as a quick and easy solution. Rather than missing out on a swim, you can simply remove your outer clothing and dive in. However, keep in mind that you will be in wet underwear for a while, and THAT may not be the most convenient!

Cost-effective:

Swimwear can be expensive, especially if you're looking for a high-quality and stylish piece. By swimming with underwear, you can save money by not having to invest in dedicated swimwear. This is probably a benefit if you almost never swim, and find yourself in a pinch!

I am not trying to be a “negative Nancy”, but another factor that should be taken into account is your underwear is not made for swimming. Therefore, swimming in them will most likely result in damage and a significantly shortened lifespan.

Cons for swimming with underwear

There are many reasons why you should not be swimming with underwear. Let's look at some of them:

Style and fashion

One of the main arguments against swimming with underwear is the lack of style and fashion. Swimwear boasts meticulously crafted cuts, patterns, and materials that elevate your appearance and deliver supreme functionality in the water. Each design element is carefully chosen to ensure you not only look your best but also experience enhanced performance. In contrast, underwear lacks these thoughtful considerations, often leading to a less flattering or fashionable aesthetic that falls short in both style and suitability for aquatic activities.

Comfort and functionality
While underwear may seem like a suitable alternative in a pinch, it may not offer the same level of comfort and functionality as swimwear. Swimwear undergoes design processes to endure the demands of swimming, offering support, flexibility, and rapid drying capabilities. Underwear, particularly cotton-based varieties, may become heavy, uncomfortable, and take longer to dry when submerged in water.

Hygiene concerns:

Underwear is specifically designed for wearing under clothing, not for direct contact with water. When swimming with underwear, there is a risk of increased moisture and bacterial growth. Especially if you are going to be prancing around in wet underwear after the swimming session for a while.

It is no secret that yeast and bacteria thrive in warm, moist areas. When walking around with wet or moist undies, you are just begging for fungal or bacterial growth down there. This can lead to discomfort and potential skin issues.

Considering these pros and cons, it becomes clear that swimming with underwear is based on personal circumstances and priorities. While it may be a convenient option in certain situations, it's essential to consider the impact on style, comfort, and hygiene.

Are you supposed to wear underwear under board shorts?

Designers deliberately create board shorts using lightweight and quick-drying materials, specifically designed to be worn without underwear. This ensures coverage and comfort. The purposeful construction allows for unrestricted movement while providing the desired level of support. Therefore, making them an ideal choice for those seeking a blend of style and practicality. Many people find that wearing underwear under board shorts can be unnecessary and may even cause discomfort or restrict movement.

However, some individuals may choose to wear underwear under board shorts for various reasons. It can provide an extra layer of support, prevent chafing, or offer additional coverage and protection.

While you have the freedom to wear underwear beneath your board shorts if you prefer. However, it is advisable to choose swimming briefs instead of underwear. Swimming briefs intentionally utilize swim-friendly fabric to deliver the same level of support as underwear. This ensures their suitability for aquatic activities.

Ultimately, the choice is up to you and what feels most comfortable for your body. Health-wise, stick to swimwear! But otherwise, you do you.

FAQ Short Answers for Swimming with Underwear

Some of the other frequently asked questions regarding swimming with underwear:

While it is possible to wear underwear under your board shorts, it is strongly discouraged. Underwear lacks the design considerations for swimming, which can lead to discomfort, slow drying, and potential exposure of more body than desired.

What are the consequences of swimming with underwear instead of a swimsuit?

Swimming with underwear can lead to discomfort, chafing, skin irritation, or infections due to prolonged exposure to water. Additionally, it can cause embarrassment if the underwear becomes see-through or exposes more of the body than intended.

Hey – who needs to swim in underwear anyway? There abundant sources of swim suits for men that are made of water safe fabrics that are fast drying, hygienic and revealingly sexy. You avoided the social issues about this topic, but that is the real issue here. Men in parts of the world (US being one of the worst probably) are told that their bodies are somehow less attractive than women’s and they should be about hiding themselves behind layers and layers of fabric all the time and everywhere. I reject that, as many men worldwide do. And the numbers are growing of men sick of seeing themselves as “dirty” or too unattractive to show off their gender attributes. Not only that, as a swimmer, I find small swimming suits enhance my swimming experience and allow me to dwell in my male looks and attributes in an APPROPRIATE way for the sport or the beach context where wearing few clothes is part of the experience! Finally – I suggest we embrace the beautiful designs of sexy swim suits for men and give up worrying about underwear – - – in general.
