3 Ways Community-Led Fashion Can Save the Planet
Learn how TBô’s Community-Led approach is helping the fashion industry become more environmentally friendly.
Are you aware of how much waste the average fashion brand generates? It’s no secret that the clothes we buy these days are by and large more disposable as fashion trends rotate faster than ever before.
But, according to the Ellen MacArthur’s Foundation’s eye-opening report on fashion production, the numbers might shock you:
- The average piece of clothing is worn 36% fewer times now than it was 15 years ago
- 87% of the total fibre input used for clothing is either landfilled or incinerated
- Less than 1% of material used to produce clothing is recycled into new clothing
Every year, billions of fashion items are produced—and as the above statistics indicate, most are destroyed or sent to landfills. Our clothes are creating more waste for the planet, yet we are getting less wear out of them than ever.
And, it’s not just the consumers or the planet who are losing. For clothing companies, manufacturing a new item of clothing costs money, material resources (including electricity and water), as well as time. In addition, a fashion company spends money transporting and warehousing each new product. When so much is invested into end products that may just end up going to landfills, it is hard to imagine why the fashion industry continues to operate this way.
The simple answer is that the average fashion brand produces new clothes on a massive scale every season based on manufacturing and consumer purchasing estimates, which can be inaccurate on the best of days. When inaccurate forecasting is implemented on such a massive scale, you end up with the amount of textile waste that we are currently seeing.
Is there a better solution: yes!
If you’re a part of the Tribe, then you already know that TBô is reshaping the way the world approaches fashion. Through its Community-Led approach to menswear, TBô is collaborating with its 400,000-member community to make the world a better place. Here’s how:
More Sustainable Fashion
TBô’s menswear is crafted from a Bamboo Viscose blend that requires far less water, electricity, and land to produce than conventional fabrics such as cotton. Not only is bamboo more environmentally friendly to produce, but it also feels better against the skin, has antimicrobial properties, and wicks moisture for superior comfort.
Smarter Fashion Creation
When it comes to creating new products, TBô works smarter, not harder. By listening to customer feedback on our community platform, we co-create clothing that is specifically designed to meet the wants and needs of the people who are going to wear it. Not only that, by gauging customer pre-order demand on our website, we produce exactly as much as we need to fulfill orders—no more, no less. The end result: very happy customers (just take a look at our reviews!), and minimal textile waste.
Digitally Driven Collaboration
The modern digital age has opened up new and smarter ways to plan, source and create new clothing. TBô has taken advantage of its leading online community platform to innovate in fashion by involving its Tribe community in every stage of product development. By providing a home for community members to discuss new products, offer feedback, and generate new ideas, product innovation happens at a much faster pace than ever before.
