3 Reasons to Sleep in Your Underwear
Sleeping in your undies could be the best decision you’ll ever make!
Given our hectic lifestyles, getting a good night’s sleep can be rare. There are, however, essential benefits to sleeping well, such as sharper thinking while you’re at the office, faster muscle repair after lifting at the gym, or just better overall mood throughout the day.
Plus, there are even longer-term health benefits associated with proper sleep, such as maintaining a healthy weight, blood pressure, and blood sugar levels. That’s why it’s important to get comfortable whenever it’s time for bed.
When we talk about sleepwear, pajamas are always the go-to—but what if we told you that there are tangible health benefits to stripping down and sleeping in your underwear?
Want to hear three good reasons? Let’s dive in!
1. Fall Asleep Faster
It’s important for your body to stay cool if you want to get a good night’s rest. As part of your circadian rhythm—the biological clock that tells your body how and when to go to sleep—your body lowers its temperature. To speed up this process, shedding unnecessary layers and going to bed in your underwear helps you stay cool, getting you to sleep faster and giving you extra time needed for a good night of sleep.
2. Improve Sleep Quality
We all hate the feeling of sweating or overheating when we’re trying to fall asleep. Want to sleep faster? Shed some layers and sleep in your underwear!
Not only does wearing fewer clothes cool your body to help you fall asleep faster, it also improves your overall sleep quality. The ideal temperature for your bedroom is between 60 and 67°F (15 to 19°C), so sleeping in your underwear helps maintain this ideal temperature state.
Deviating from this range could impact your rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, which is the deeper level of sleep needed for full mental and physical recovery from the day.
In fact, a 2012 study published by the National Institutes of Health found that “the temperature of the room where you sleep is one of the most important factors in achieving quality sleep.”
3. Improve Intimacy
There are health benefits to stripping down to your underwear when sleeping next to your spouse or partner! Skin-to-skin contact is an amazing way to build and maintain intimacy, even while just sleeping in bed. The proof? A 2015 study produced in Sweden found that oxytocin, a chemical associated with improved well-being and combating stress, is produced in the brain during low-intensity stimulation of the skin.
So, strip down, cuddle up and get cozy—it’s good for your health!
Extra Tip: Keep it Loose!
Whatever you decide to wear to sleep, make sure it’s loose enough to keep you cool and comfortable. Many studies have been written about how overheating in the genital region can negatively affect sperm production, so make sure that you’re not restricted by your underwear during sleep in order to let your “boys” breathe while promoting proper blood circulation.
Do What Makes You Comfortable
There are very compelling reasons to strip down to your underwear when going to bed: you stay cool, comfortable, and dry, which will help you get to sleep faster and sleep longer. That’s why we think going to bed in your underwear is such a great decision. At the end of the day, however, getting proper sleep is about doing what makes you comfortable. Try different options and see what works for you!
